Brian Protheroe mostly eschewed the music biz, or at least a goodly part of its trappings, when it came knocking at his door in the 70s, preferring to maintain his already established career as an actor and that may be no bad thing. There's no telling what sort of damage the machinery of the biz may have done to his wholly original and eclectic muse. We are the winners though because he made three albums without too much interference and the songs, written by himself or Martin Duncan or co-written, are each gems. This compilation gives you a generous sampling from each album, presented chronologically and is a worthy choice if you can't spring for the Big Box (all the albums plus). This and City Song (his 2cd single with 17 bonus tracks) are good companion pieces and a great way to enjoy this artist and his part pop, part singer-songwriter, part vaudeville, part cabaret, part rock, part show-tune music. Beware though: Mr. Protheroe's sometimes deceptively easy music is insidious - it worms its way in and makes a home, so be prepared for a relationship.
