Comedian Mike Birbiglia’s hilarious New York Times bestseller is now a major motion picture co-written and produced by Ira Glass (This American Life) that IFC Films will release in theaters and through Video on Demand in August—starring Birbiglia and Emmy-nominated actress Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under).Finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor Sleepwalk with Me is a comedic memoir, but I’m only thirty-two years old, so I’d hate for you to think I’m “wrapping it up,” so to speak. But I tell some really personal stories. Stories that I considered not publishing time and time again—about my childhood, about girls I made out with when I was thirteen, about my parents, and, of course, about my bouts with sleepwalking. Bring this book to bed. And sleepwalk with me.
I was in the mood for a funny book after some heavy-duty reading of biographies and whatnot, so I searched the comedy section and came up with this book. I was sort of expecting a gut-splitting laugh-o-rama, but what I got was a very well-written and warm book that made me a smile the entire time I was reading it.This book is a collection of stories by Mike Birbiglia, a comedian whose biography has been discussed many times here so I won't repeat it, except to say that I did not know who he was before I read this book. These stories include his beginning steps into the world of comedy, his family, and his first love, his friendship with fellow comedian Mitch Hedberg, and, of course, his little sleepwalking problem. These stories are gently funny, warm, comforting, and just all-over enjoyable. Birbiglia opens up to the reader in a way that I would definitely not have expected from a comedian (though why I wouldn't have expected it, I don't know exactly). I was also a bit surprised by the quality of the writing...again, I'm not sure why, but perhaps it has something to do with Birbiglia's self-effacing personality.I really cannot recommend this book highly enough. Reading it just felt like a wonderful, relaxing, and fun vacation. I loved it.
