Katherine Anne Porter would surely be ranked among the best short story writers of the last century. Her total work is relatively short consisting of three collections of short stories and novellas, one novel, and assorted reviews and criticisms. She has been described as a perfectionist who proceeded very deliberately and only published her very best fiction. Based on her short stories, I can say that many are among the best I have read, being dense, sensitive, and beautifully constructed. The Collected Stories consist of three collections of stories: Flowering Judas and other Stories; Pale Horse, Pale Rider; and The Leaning Tower and other Stories. This collection took some time to get through, being 500 pages long, with many stories so deeply rendered they took a while to absorb. While not all her stories are of equal merit, the best shine with polish and exhibit an expert craftmanship. My personal favorites were: He; The Jilting of Granny Weatherall; Noon Wine; Pale Horse, Pale Rider; The Grave; The Downward Path to Wisdom; and Holiday. I highly recommend this writer of you appreciate great short fiction.
