On An Evening of New York Songs and Stories, Vega revisits some of the most iconic songs in her repertoire as well as more hidden gems in a stunning live recording on which she is backed by longtime guitarist, Gerry Leonard, bassist Jeff Allen and keyboardist Jamie Edwards. Recorded at New York City's famed Café Carlyle in early 2019, An Evening of New York Songs and Stories includes both familiar songs like "Luka" and "Tom's Diner" and deep cuts from her catalogue like "Frank and Ava" and "Ludlow Street". The mix of repertoire also features "New York Is My Destination" from Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers, Vega's one woman play about the Southern gothic novelist Carson McCullers, and a cover of her late friend Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side."

Vega's new live album recorded in March 2019 is one of the better live recordings that I've heard in awhile. Recorded in a small NYC club gives the album a nice intimacy that many live recordings do not possess. Vega in fine voice, acoustic guitar and backed by three top notch musicians performs each song effortlessly.As for the selections, she picks from her long career, obvious choices("Luka", "Tom's Diner") but lesser known songs also which includes five from her 2007 album Beauty & Crime, one of my favorites. Also, she performs a nice cover of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side".I was very glad to see her inclusion of "Anniversary" from Beauty&Crime as one of her encores at show's end. It's such a beautiful and heart-felt song performed here with basically voice and piano. Listening to the lyrics I couldn't help but think of the trauma NYC experienced this past spring and the rest of the world is currently enduring.Anyway, an excellent recording which I highly recommend!
