Product Description

An electric collection of new short stories from the inimitable, bestselling writer of Talk to Me and Outside Looking InIn the title story of Walk Between the Raindrops, a woman sits down next to a man at a bar and claims she has ESP. In “Thirteen Days,” passengers on a cruise line are quarantined, to horrifying and hilarious effect. And “Hyena” begins simply: “That was the day the hyena came for him, and never mind that there were no hyenas in the South of France, and especially not in Pont-Saint-Esprit—it was there and it came for him.”A virtuoso of the short form, T.C. Boyle returns with an inventive, uproarious, and masterfully told collection of short stories characterized by biting satire, resonant wit, and a boundless, irrepressible imagination.

The stories in this volume just hit one after the other. All with different tones and feels, but packed with thrills. The humor is quintessential Boyle. Just a sentence, a phrase, even a single adjective can have you in a fit of laughter. Still at his best when working through the eyes of the young, disenchanted male character, I rated “The Shape of a Teardrop” as the top of the crop in this superlative collection. The title-story was also astounding and unusually styled to the point that I didn’t figure how it would tie together and yet succeeds beautifully (imagery of a bear washed down from the mountains in a mudslide and onto the beach stayed with me a long time.) Highly stylized and scintillating as always, I can’t wait to read his forthcoming Blue Skies.
