Letters To The Good Voice is a collection of eclectic poems and short stories that offer unique glimpses into childlike whimsy, grief through the lens of poetry and lyricism, the otherworldly use of imagery and metaphor in short stories, and the power of a true story well-told. The collection includes titles such as “Stevie and Frida,” a poem about a toad and frog who fall in love;” “Young Fighter,” a lyrical journey through the life of an abandoned child mentored by his older, wiser self:” “William Joseph Sorensen,” a story of three childhood friends enduring the inevitable loss of innocence and a test of their friendship; “Molly and Esther,” a tragic tale about two sisters unable to move past old wounds and an obsession with creating new ones; and “Faith Healing,” a comedic and painful tale of the author’s youthful fascination with a particular televangelist and his hope for a better life. Otherwise know for his songwriting, this collection is the authors first such publication of his work.
I started reading this because I know the author, John. However, as I got into it, it was something that I didn't want to put down- it's an interesting mix of his artistry and experiences, plus observations about life. The writing is done really well- not just expressing interesting ideas, but also expressing them in interesting ways. I started to read it at first just to get to know my friend better, but I KEPT reading it just because it was genuinely intriguing writing.I knew John is a good musician, but I had no idea that reading a book by him would be this much fun...I think it's great!
