Vivid, engaging stories of childhood in India and graduate studies and career in the US in this book written by my fun-loving uncle. The book interestingly describes the cultural complexity of growing up in a well-educated traditional Gujarati Brahmin family, exposure to English style education and subsequent studies and life in the US. Indian immigrants are a rich mishmash of culture and values and this book authentically captures this. Adventurous and friendly by nature he has lived life to the fullest. It is fun to read about the ups and downs of his life.Vijay Yajnik’s father was General Manager of ACC (Associated Cement Company) and was in charge of setting up cement plants all over India so he grew up in small towns (Porbander, Dwarka, Jamul) and studied in a boarding school, Rajkumar College, Rajkot. While in the boarding school, Vijay discovered his love for the performing arts and exposure to English language education expanded his world. Subsequently, he studied engineering at IIT Kanpur, a premier engineering school.The stories about his graduate studies in the US at Stony Brook, NY and MSU (Michigan State University) tell how he went through financial hardship and triumphed. With this combination of engineering and business skills his early career success was in the mortgage and banking industry.While enjoying a fast-paced career and wonderful family life in California he feels the conflict of wanting to be there for his parents and that emotional connection to his Indian roots.This book is a precious record of the history of this generation.
