They are also available as separate 99-cent e-short stories on amazon.com In Hunting Season, a Jemez Pueblo man's death is considered a hunting accident, and an Indian reporter must find out what really happened. A sick, elderly Cochiti Pueblo man evades attempts to send him to a hospital by going into the Jemez Mountains. In The Ancestor, a Tiwa tribal policeman is torn between the dominant society’s law and his own people’s beliefs when an Ancient One’s bones are discovered in 1934. In The Woman with a Rain Pot, a veteran of the U.S. war in Iraq who lost a leg for his country must solve the year-old cold case of a student who was murdered while illegally digging for artifacts near Acoma Pueblo. To Steal What Is Sacred explores the criminal market for the sale of ancient, stolen Indian artifacts. While excavating a 500-year-old pueblo ruin in 1934, an archaeology student sees spirits from the past that persuade him to rethink his career in Shadows of a Lost Time.

I'd forgotten the pleasure of reading a short story - you get the thrill of conflict, character development and resolution without staying up all night. At least that's what happens in the hands of a thoroughly competent writer. Herrick manages to convey the central, universal theme of each story while, at the same time, providing insight into the wounded psyche of a war veteran and giving the reader a fascinating picture of the myths and customs of Pueblo communities and the individuals within them. A lovely collection not to be missed.
