Product Description

This is our top-selling book over the last three years and a good choice to dive into our multi-book series about the grand history of the US Submarine Force. Sub Tales (subtitled, Stories that Seldom Surface) has most recently been fully updated in September 2024. Every chapter has been edited with an emphasis on greater clarity and enhanced historical accuracy. More background information on the subject at hand is included, and new cross-references have been added to the other books in the series.Packed with more than three dozen gripping stories from the annals of US submarine history, Sub Tales attempts to convey some of the drama, adventure, and humor that has typified service aboard the submarines of the US Navy over the past 100+ years. Included in this edition is a new completely new story about polar bear sightings by submarines, and a new description of an unlikely rescue at sea by the Seadragon! The 40 stories are accompanied by more than 200 photos as well as a bonus section that includes seven “submarine lists” certain to entertain the reader. As a compendium, the book may be read in any order. Stories vary in length from short to medium to long. You decide the reading order. The topics range from presidential visits to inadvertent whale strikes to dramatic brushes with death. Also featured are detailed stories of uncommon bravery and sacrifice. You will learn a lot about the mettle of the men who “rode the boats” in the defense of the United States. Written for both submarine veterans and civilian enthusiasts, the language is clear and correct. You will have a hard time putting the book down once you begin it!We are pleased to have benefited from the considerable skills of two associate editors. Mike Chapman and Keith Weitemeyer are two literate students of submarine history, and their editorial perspectives are found throughout the book to tighten up narratives, keep language choices in certain passages on point, and draw larger conclusions from many of the stories included herein. The authors also relied greatly on the expertise of several additional submarine veterans who reviewed passages about propulsion, electrical systems, weapons systems, and more.Chosen by BookAuthority as one of the ten best submarine books in the world for five years running (2019-2023), Sub Tales has consistently earned solid reader ratings and sold thousands of copies. Together with its four sequels (More Sub Tales, Sub Tales 3, Sub Tales 4, and Sub Tales 5, the four-book "Sub Tales" series represents a distinctive collection of some of the finest stories of intrigue and courage of the US Submarine Force. (USSVI). This philanthropic goal was reached in May 2021. Since that time, more than $6,000 has been donated to other deserving submarine-based charities. Thank you for your interest in our books!

As the son of a career Navy man who served primarily on battleships and cruisers, I grew up with some exposure to the “skimmers” of the Navy. Submarines, though, were the mysterious side of the Navy from my perspective, so when I read “Poopie Suits and Cowboy Boots” a couple of years ago, I found it a fascinating look into the life of a submariner, from their period of training up through their period of service aboard one of these metallic denizens of the deep. When “Sub Tales” was released, I looked forward to reading about some of the true stories and events that have taken place throughout the history of submarines in the American navy. The stories are the product of hours of painstaking research on the part of the authors, searching through archival news coverage, as well as first-hand accounts from submarine veterans who were actually present at the time of their occurrence, and who could offer on-the-scene perspectives that one wouldn’t get from other sources. As I have pored over each chapter, I have learned so many things I never knew – the evolution of submarines over the decades, the interesting story behind the launch of the first nuclear-powered sub, the unusual baseball game that was played at the North Pole by the crew of the USS Seadragon in the summer of 1960, and due to the position of the field and the bases in relation to the time zones, balls were able to be hit into the next day! Other more moving events, such as the loss of the USS F-4 in 1915, and the heroic efforts to recover the sub and her doomed crew, literally brought a lump to my throat while reading. I learned about the amazing efforts of the USS Scamp in 1987 to rescue the crew of a freighter that had foundered during a raging nor’easter in the North Atlantic sea, forcing the crew to abandon ship, made even more noteworthy by the fact that it took place on the Scamp’s final patrol before decommissioning. So many great stories in this book, written so that even a landlubber like I can understand, thanks to the thorough explanations in laymen’s terms of anything that might be unfamiliar. If you have ever been interested in learning about some of the more fascinating events throughout the history of the U.S. submarine program, as well as about many of the notable individuals and personalities behind it, “Sub Tales” is the book for you. Making it even better is knowing that all proceeds from the sale are donated to the Scholarship Fund of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.!
