Product Description

“Did Amma really steal a bicycle, and is it even possible to wrestle your shadow?” Did you ever wonder how your parents were as kids? Were they up to mischief? Did they get into trouble a lot? Then read these stories about a mother who tells her child about her strange and exciting adventures growing up in a village in South India. Look carefully at the beautiful illustrations... and imagine yourself in this fantastic world of midnight feasts, roving hyenas, shrieking peacocks, buzzing insects and stolen bicycles...does it sound unbelievable? And yet...could it all be true?

We’re so happy to have been able to add this beautiful book to our family library. It offers a poignant reading experience, filled with entertaining stories a mother narrates about her childhood to her own daughter and exquisite artwork by Tejubehan, a self-taught Indian folk artist. The stories are quite straightforward beginning with the narrator’s daughter’s jealousy at her mother’s childhood adventures, and the mother telling her the simple yet sublime stories of traveling to school as a child in rural South India, her temporary obsession with peacock feathers, and, of course, about maybe-kinda stealing a bicycle. This isn’t a long book but it’s content-rich, and the reader can spend just as long looking at all of the detailed illustrations as reading the text. I’m very grateful for all of the laughs it's provided and will continue providing because it's a book you can enjoy again and again.
