Retailing Pioneer Fred Meijer comes alive in the pages of this intimate biography, told in part by the people in Fred's life - from store cashiers to American presidents. Astute businessman, visionary arts patron, homespun philosopher - Fred is a man of many parts. His story weaves a chronicle of how to succeed in business, how to shape one's life, how to leave the world a better place, and how to have fun along the way.
My first "summer puppy love" lived in Grand Rapids when I vacationed yearly in Muskegon so I knew about "Meijer" as a dynamic GR town force as early as the 1960s and had ample reason to follow it. ["Puppy love" went on more than 10 years, including winters of separation.] I knew first hand from my "reliable source" what a revered public figure Mr. Meijer and his corporation/charitable efforts were in Grand Rapids. When my wife and I visited Grand Rapids to explore the Gerald Ford Museum and, thus, the ASTOUNDING Meijer sculpture park and gardens, I HAD to have the bio volume [if not at the "Gift Shop" inflated price . . . so enter AMAZON.com for me and I am not a dedicated Internet shopper.]Visualize an immigrant who has been successful beyond his WILDEST dreams: both in love and in business. Now, try to accept that this multi-billionaire plowed unimaginable amounts of money into public works gracefully, willingly, lovingly. I've seen the beautiful result, still a "work in progress" at the Meijer Gardens. BUY THIS BOOK! Before you make a visit, if possible; from AMAZON [not from the "Gift Shop"] if you visit. Shame on you that don't both read and visit. It will be your loss. See also: [...] for the park itself, [...] for the very educational/entertaining the GR location of the Ford Presidential Library [a rare presidential library that occupies two cities: GR and Ann Arbor, and certainly [...] as the Visitor's Guide.Buy the book; visit the gardens; walk the city; see the Ford Museum. You won't be disappointed and you will be well served to know Mr. Meijer's passionate public commitment. As my 60s generation said: "Be there or be square." [Excellent, friendly and reasonable accommodations at the Quality Inn, Airport, SE side.] There are times when tourists purchase a book to remind them of the experience. Books can also introduce the would-be traveler to an unachievable destination. Whether you go there or not: BUY THIS BOOK from AMAZON for a fair deal.Avanti!
