Dylan has been looking forward to the Midwinter Meltdown Tournament for months. He knows this will be the year his hockey team wins. Then a pre-season injury takes him out of the game. Even though his wrist is healing, he's too weak to play. Can Dylan be part of the team if he's stuck on the bench?
Finding hockey books is almost impossible for kids, and my daughter can't get enough... So when I stumbled across some Jake Maddox books I really was just hoping for something that would buy me a little more time. Turns out, I don't need more time. I need more Jake Maddox books! :)My daughter is in first grade, just recently turned six, and is general reading at the 9-12 year old range. This book fit right in, with only a handful of words (revolution, being one I remember off the top of my head) that required any help or reminders. She literally read the whole thing in a little less than 3 hours on the ride to and from one of her hockey tournaments...Her review is the best that I can give - she's already asked for more and is about 7 chapters into her next Jake Maddox book (The Back-Up Goalie)!! She loved it and excitedly talks about Dylan's story as if he were a teammate. She's already said that she'll be rereading Hockey Meltdown soon... Right after she finishes the other two books and "reads about Gretzky one more time at least".As for us adults - it's great that she's reading and is so into the story. I love that it challenged her without being difficult to the point of frustrating. I especially love that it stayed on point with what all of her coaches are stressing too - team work, being part of something bigger, working for the better cause, realizing that you're one player and it takes each person's talents to come together for the game!! I love that it kept her interest where so many books fall short for her. I love that it clearly created these kids to the point where my daughter "knew" them.My only complaint, if you can call it that... I've seen the "girls" sports books, so can we get a GIRL ice hockey book?!?! Please?!?! =D
