There's a divinity that shapes our ends. Consider the case of Henry Pifield Rice, detective.
The Man With Two Left Feet is a collection of short stories by P. G. Wodehouse, the creator of everyone's favourite butler Jeeves, and his intrepid master Bertie Wooster. Neither of these famous characters appears in the collection, although that is by no means to its detriment. The stories feature a variety of heroes, from a bookish bank teller in the title story, to an ugly but loveable dog in 'The Mixer'.Roughly half the stories are set in England, the other half in the US, partcularly New York, but all are delivered in Wodehouse's breezy yet warm-hearted style. There are plenty of wry twists and loads of deftly delivered gags. What is truly enjoyable is his intelligence. He often writes like Raymond Chandler without the jaded worldview. His deep affection for the outsider is soon apparent - Wodehouse is not one to set up a villain for a fall so much as he revels in the most unlikely contender in the room finding love and happiness through their pluck and unworldly charm. A delightful and still fresh read.
