My wife, Pat, encouraged me to record my stories about being in the military and our post-military lives—she wanted the record for our children and grandchildren. While SMAJ was originally written for my family, friends suggested the public would enjoy reading it; I have complied by publishing this second edition. All of the stories were recorded on a tape recorder, then transcribed and edited. It took over a year to record them all. I had a lot of fun doing it. My wife and I spent twenty-two years in the U. S. Army, then put twenty-two years into the restaurant business. We were successful in both, thanks to Pat and my children. People do not give enough credit to the military wife. They are a special breed of women who endure more pain and sacrifice than the public is aware. We servicemen may be the ones in harm’s way, but our wives worry about us, put up with immense heartache, and all the problems associated with caring for our children.
This book was a real heart-warming eye-opener for me. Mr. Warren did extraordinary things during his long service in the U.S. military and he seems to have zero ego about it. My jaw just fell open when he got into the war stories. I can't believe what he went through and survived. It's told in a straight-forward manner -- easy to read, often funny -- just really well worth reading this gentleman's memoir. He also provides a glimpse into how to think about family -- and he completely honors his wife.
