Shigeko Suzuki really pushes the traditional Japanese bent for minimalism.the aptly titled Silent Stories contains not a wasted word or note. at firstlistening her voice seems a little weak, but upon subsequent listening onecan perceive the careful intonation and purity of intent. both the singingand the piano accompaniment are so literal it sounds as though it was playeddirectly from the sheet music. I was moved by this, what you might say,respect for the material. the two standard American ballads, the Victor Young -Ned Washington My Foolish Heart, and the Richard Rodgers - Lorenz HartMy Romance, are romantic, oddly sad, and lyrical. the album has an almostindefinable aura. the price I paid ($50) a couple of years ago, was a littlesteep, however.
