Product Description

In Tails of Triumph: Animals Tell Their Katrina Stories, pet whisperer Terri Steuben shares what the animals told her about “the day the water came.”For two weeks, Terri kept a journal of her experiences with The Humane Society of the United States as she found and rescued animals in the muddy rubble of New Orleans. Dogs, cats, birds, horses and other creatures that survived Hurricane Katrina talked to her about their despair, confusion, determination, and ultimately, freedom. You’ll read, in their own words, the stories of… The dog that roamed the streets for food and took mouthfuls back to a little buddy who couldn’t leave their house The cat that broke into a kitchen cupboard to get to food and lived quite nicely off of toaster pastries The guard dog that didn’t want to be rescued because he needed to stay and keep his house safe, only to finally get outside and realize most of it had washed away The white horse that waited patiently for weeks for her daddy to find her, and almost broke down the stall when she sensed him coming up the road The cats that rationed food and water to make it last, just like their mom told them to do The 500-pound pig that weathered the storm and danced with her mama and papa in the backyard The fighting dog that wouldn’t fight and was chained under a house without food or water for more than three weeks, then was saved and adopted by a caring, new owner. There’s sadness and joy inn these amazing stories. These courageous animals lived through a nightmare and never gave up. There’s much to learn from them about what our pets think and feel, and the depth of the loyalty and love they have for us. Their words will inspire you and help you better understand all animals. Thanks to Terri Steuben’s insights and storytelling, you’ll laugh, cry, and see your own pets in a wonderful new light. Hurricane Katrina was a defining moment in history—for pets as well as people.

When Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and New Orleans and then the levees were breached in New Orleans, my second thought after considering how terrifying it must be for the people caught in the flood, was how terrifying it must also be for the non-human animals. I wished I could volunteer, but as a disabled person, all I could do was support the volunteers who were on the ground, both those who were helping the humans and those working with the LASPCA and HSUS, who were helping the other animals. We heard so many sad stories coming out of the area. It was joyful to read this book and hear of so many successes. Terri Steuben does a wonderful job of bringing those stories to life and bringing to life the dogs and cats she helped rescue. We also meet some birds, rabbits, snakes, Petunia the loveable pig, and an amazing horse named Lady along the way. There were tragedies of course (one involving a little Yorkie, and other involving a rescue in the midst of death are stories that will stick with me), but her emphasis on the rescue of some amazing, resilient creatures (some of whom had gone almost a month without care) is what stands out. I can only express my deepest gratitude to Terri and all who committed themselves to search and rescue and other critical animal care in the midst of what can only be described as a living nightmare. Their actions made the dream of rescue a reality for so many wonderful creatures, including the human pet parents who were so concerned about leaving their four-legged family members. I am also grateful to the legislators who have passed laws since Katrina to ensure that four-legged and two-legged alike can find shelter in a disaster. It is estimated that the number of humans who died in Katrina may have been halved if they could have taken their entire families with them to safety. Let us hope that this type of disaster does not strike again. Thank you Terri, for all you do.
