“Full of thrills and chills, deft humor, and ghostly goings on, Toxic Cookout is a blistering complication of Rob Dinsmoor’s most provocative and compelling tales.” Nicholas Lichtfield, author of Swampjack Virus and Editor of Lowestoft Chronicle .“Toxic Cookout is equal parts perceptive, humorous, and bizarre. Ranging from mystical to futurist, Dinsmoor’s wild scenarios create the perfect backdrop as his characters attempt to control, correct, or co-conspire with the universe.” Jen Knox, author of Resolutions “Howard, Terra, and Heather are characters that only a gifted writer could forge into being. They’re just a few of Dinsmoor’s unique portrayals, and he places them in scenarios equal to their depictions. In Toxic Cookout, protagonist and plot are adeptly textured with perfect measures of irony, humor, and insight to make for a marvelous repast. A savory, not septic, shindig for the reader.” Michael C. Keith, author of Stories in the Key of Me
This book really had me hooked from the very first short story to the last. They vary in the tone, some stories are sad, some are disturbing, some are heartwarming, some are silly, but all very exciting to read.I liked how the protagonist had a different personalities in every story, though I feel like the differences could have been made more noticeable. I believe the only protagonist that really differs from the others is Selfies, a self-centered chick who had a rather interesting friend...The stories are very diverse in what they are about, and I loved that about this book. It can be about family, inspiration, worm holes, aliens, you name it! The author does a good job of making them all believable, but also not too serious. My favorite story is Times Are Different in Port St. Joe. That one definitely takes you somewhere. One thing that this book did a marvelous job is the setting up of the world and characters without making the story too long. It gives enough information for us to create these worlds, and then take us for s wild ride. The stories never felt too short or too long. Just perfect.Overall a very enjoyable book. The stories are impactful, amusing, and so different from one another. If you want an afternoon of entertainment, this is the book.
