Product Description

There are many texts on music and hearing loss, but what makes this volume unique is that it does not require the reader to have any previous background in hearing science. It is written in non-technical language for the layman, and begins by explaining how the human ear hears sound. It covers the interplay between music, speech and hearing devices and discusses hearing conservation for musicians. The final chapter contains inspiring narratives from eleven deaf or hard of hearing musicians belonging to the Association of Adult Musicians with Hearing Loss. These eleven stories describe using a variety of strategies to integrate hearing loss and music making. Musicians new to hearing loss, hearing-impaired adults wanting to learn a musical instrument, audiologists, music educators, and music researchers will also find this book a valuable addition to their library collection.

I had just come back from an Australian conference on music and Audiology and somehow googled this book. Its nice for those with a hearing loss or needing to understand those with a loss to read to appreciate some success and enjoyment from music listening and performing that is denied in their own self limiting way to so many hearing impaired people. Professionally i am frustrated by technology limitations and possibly manufacturers miss leading marketting concerning hearing aids and music quality. this is no different to the manufacturers inferred claims for their devices performance in other hostile situations. Many if not all clients will not receive their expected outcome due to limitation in their cochlea performance. its uplifting to read some of the chapters. As young people in general become more and more spectatiors of music rather than participants i have my own belief that music is so important in lifting spirits . So hearing of people who have reconnected with music and as a result have achieved uplifting outcomes is wonderful with suggestions of strategies for many.
